Is Plug-In Solar Legal in Your State? (Full 50-State Tracker)

Is plug-in (balcony) solar legal in the US? It depends on your state and utility. There is no federal ban; it’s allowed in most states with a UL-listed (UL 3700) microinverter and compliance with your utility’s interconnection rules. 10 states have signed plug-in solar into law (CO, ME, MD, UT, VA, CT, VT, NH, NJ, CA); New York passed both chambers (A9111C, 28 May 2026) but had not been delivered to the Governor as of 7 October 2026. Check your state below. Last updated October 7, 2026.

For outages: backup power that ships fast

A plug-in kit lowers your bill while the sun is up and switches off in a blackout. For power during an outage you need a portable power station — a separate purchase.

Plug-in solar sits in a legal gray area across most of the U.S. — but 2026 is changing that as states and the UL 3700 standard catch up. Here's where every state stands, with a detailed page for all 50.

General information, not legal advice. Your utility's interconnection policy matters as much as state law, and rules change fast. Always confirm before you buy or install.
